During the production of the Mount Dora Coloring Book, I had the idea to include a recipe with a “local flavor” and invited Pisces Rising to share one of their signature dishes. Joe Cusmano, the head chef, was happy to share his recipe for one of his favorite dishes: Shrimp & Grits which is featured in the coloring book. You can download it here.

During a recent evening dinner with my friend Marie of Seriously Travel, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the wonderful people I had been communicating with at Pisces Rising in person, especially Jessica Allman, the general manager, and Joe Cusmano.

The restaurant is lovingly wrapped around a Florida Cracker-style bungalow home built in the 1920s that gives off captivating Historic Florida vibes as soon as you step in. Pisces Rising has celebrated Florida cuisine for over 15 years. They are devoted to farm-to-table practices, buying from local farmers whenever possible, and delivering their beautiful meals with passion and grace. Enjoy an intimate dinner in the main dining room or on the outside deck watching the sunset over Lake Dora.

Marie and I thoroughly enjoyed our delicious dinner that started off with a Cubana Mix Spring Rolls, a delicious combination of mojo marinated ham and pulled pork, cheeses and a mustard-pickle dipping sauce. This exquisite appetizer was followed by a Charcuterie board. The selection of seasonal meats & artisanal cheese, fresh berries, onion on focaccia bread with a special mustard was a delightful combination of flavors.

The first main course our waitress presented us with was an colorful plate of Shrimp & Grits, one of their signature dishes. The gouda grits were purpIe, topped with blackened shrimp, gator andouille,

peppers, spinach, red onion, garlic and an amazing white wine cream sauce. I LOVE a good sauce, and this one left nothing to be desired!!

A second main course soon followed, a pan seared duck breast on a skewer with veggies and candied nuts.

When we thought it couldn’t get any better, a beautiful Red Velvet Cake was served for dessert. The filling was a combination of a Bailey’s Cheesecake filling and caramel

mousse covered with a honey sauce. It was the perfect ending to a wonderfully delicious meal. Enjoying the sunset over beautiful Lake Dora was an added bonus! If you’re looking for a special lunch or dinner, Pisces Rising is your place for any occasion!
