Day 24: Israel – Nativity Processions

In Bethlehem, revered as the birthplace of Jesus Christ, Christmas carries deep spiritual meaning. Each year, thousands of pilgrims from across the world journey to this small West Bank town to celebrate amid the timeless setting of Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity, believed to mark the exact site of Christ's birth.

Festivities begin early in December and culminate in a Nativity Procession on Christmas Eve. This procession is the highlight and is led by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, who travels from Jerusalem to Bethlehem in a motorcade accompanied by scouts playing bagpipes—a tradition dating back to the British Mandate era. As the Patriarch arrives at Manger Square, he is greeted by clergy, local officials, and worshippers carrying candles and singing carols in many languages.

Inside the ancient basilica, the Midnight Mass draws believers of all backgrounds. The service is conducted in multiple languages, its prayers, incense, and hymns echoing through stone walls that have witnessed centuries of devotion. Pilgrims descend into the Grotto of the Nativity, kneeling before the silver star embedded in the floor—a poignant moment of connection to the heart of the Christian story.
