Day 21: Romania – Carols, Bear Dances, and the Star of Bethlehem

In Romania, Crăciunul (Christmas ) is a season steeped in faith, folklore, and festivity. The celebrations begin on December 20, with Ignat Day, when families prepare for the holiday feast, symbolizing abundance and renewal. What follows is a joyous time of caroling, pageantry, and dance that fills villages and cities alike.

One of the most cherished traditions is colindatul, when children and young people go door to door singing carols and carrying the Star of Bethlehem — a radiant handmade ornament representing the light of Christ. In return for their songs, they receive apples, pretzels, or small gifts. These carols, some dating back centuries, bring blessings of peace and prosperity to every home.

Adding to the color of the season are the Ursul (bear dances), a spectacular folk ritual performed mainly in the Moldavia region. Groups of dancers, cloaked in real or imitation bear skins, parade through the streets to the beat of drums. The performance symbolizes the death and rebirth of nature at the end of the year and is said to chase away evil spirits while welcoming good fortune for the year ahead.

The celebrations culminate in church services, family gatherings, and rich meals featuring sarmale, cozonac, and piftie. Blending ancient rituals with Christian devotion, Romanian Christmas radiates warmth, song, and renewal—a living celebration of both faith and heritage.
